In the first session of the 2026 Para Pan Pacific Championships, American athlete Katie Kubiak set a new world record in the S5 class 50 butterfly to be the first American swimmer to win the $10,000 prize money bonus.
Kubiak stopped the clock in 37.21, taking nearly a second off Lu Dong‘s 2024 record time of 38.17, set at the Paralympic Games in Paris.
The 2026 Para Pan Pacific Championships is the first meet where the “Stronger Than You Think Performance Incentive Fund” is active, and all American para swimmers have the ability to earn $10,000 in prize money for breaking a world record.
The money for the rewards is coming from the $500,000 Ali Truwit‘s fund gave the USOPC. Kubiak will only be able to earn the $10,000 award once for the 50 butterfly, even if she swims faster than her world record time in tonight’s final, but she will be able to earn the $3,472 award for a gold medal if she wins the event tonight.
Kubiak also picked up two American records in prelims, swimming 1:16.10 in the 100 free and 2:48.03 in the 200 free.
