Rex Maurer swam to the #7 performance all-time in the men’s short course yards 1000 free during Friday afternoon’s dual meet at Texas A&M. Maurer posted a 8:37.19 in his win.
His swim also was a pool record at Texas A&M. The previous pool record stood at a 8:44.11, set back in 2001 by Michigan’s Chris Thompson. Thompson notably represented the US at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

The swim marked a four second lifetime best for the Texas junior as Maurer came into the day with a best time of a 8:41.23 that he swam a year ago during the Texas dual against Texas A&M. That had sat as the #20 performance before today.
Maurer currently sits at #2 in the NCAA this season as Ahmed Jaouadi of Florida swam to a 8:36.65 during the Florida and Georgia dual meet back in October.
Maurer holds the American record in the 500 free as he swam a 4:04.45 during midseason in November 2024 in the middle of his sophomore season. He went on to win the NCAA title in the 500 free in a 4:05.35 and also won an NCAA title in the 400 IM.
