The reigning women’s NCAA Champions will open their season today in match 2 of the College Swim League (CSL) season, with a loaded match-up set to take place.

After a fast night of swimming last night, tonight’s match features Virginia, NC State, Georgia, and Alabama as all four teams will face-off. Virginia, the 6-time defending NCAA Champions on the women’s side, will be the favorite to take home the top spot tonight. However, a deep NC State squad should not be ignored as the NC State team ranks #7 on both sides of SwimSwam’s power rankings.

As with last night, we can expect the action to happen quickly due to the CSL format. We will be working our hardest to keep results up-to-date as fast as possible.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

UVA’s Claire Curzan had a strong showing to start her first CSL match. The American and NCAA Record holder threw down a massive 1:46.85 to claim the top spot in the 200 backstroke by over 3 seconds. Curzan was rewarded with a Jackpot swim for her efforts, putting the UVA women well ahead of the field to start her campaign. NC State’s Leah Shackley was well off Curzan’s pace, but still threw-down a very solid swim of her own to touch in 1:50.09 for 2nd place. However, UVA got an extra point boost as Teagan O’Dell made her debut for the school and finished 3rd in 1:51.08.

David King held off a strong field in the men’s 200 backstroke to further establish UVA’s lead. While the was bunched-up at the start, King slowly surged ahead by the 100 yard mark. Alabama’s Tommy Hagar made a push at that point, but King only got faster to touch first in 1:39.11 for another jackpot swim. Hagar touched 2nd in 1:40.16, just ahead of NC State’s Daniel Diehl, who had a strong final 50 to close on the leaders and finish in 1:40.22.

Eneli Jefimova of NC State and Leah Hayes had a fantastic battle for first place throughout the race. Just when it seemed like Jefimova was about to pull-away, Hayes would find another surge and close that gap. Ultimately, however, it was Jefimova who got to the wall first in a time of 2:06.72 after a great closing 50. Hayes would settle for second in 2:07.99 after fading slightly over the final lengths of the race.

Alabama needed a points surge, and they got one via Steijn Louter, who posted the school’s first CSL victory with a 1:55.27 performance in the 200 breaststroke. Louter led the field with a great performance, coming in just ahead of NC State’s Jan Gajda, who was 2nd in 1:56.30. UVA freshman Gerhardt Hoover finished 3rd overall in his debut in college swimming, touching in 1:57.86.

It was Olympian Katie Grimes leading the way for the UVA women in yet another event. Grimes led the field by over 2 seconds en route to touching in a 4:38.08. While it wasn’t a jackpot swim for Grimes, she was able to best the field by over a body length with her swim.

The men’s 500 proved to be a battle with the top swimmers all throwing down very impressive times, especially considering its still only September. Thomas Koski led the field with the top time en route to Georgia’s first CSL win, swimming a jackpot swim with his 4:12.85. Bama’s Leonardo Alcantara had a solid swim for second, coming in only a few tenths behind in 4:13.18. Sean Green closed like a train for UGA, swimming to third place in 4:14.49.

VIRGINIA HAS SELECTED BACKSTROKE FOR THE WOMENS SKINS

As expected, Virginia dominated the women’s 4×50 freestyle relay taking home the top time in 1:25.51 to best the field. While UVA won the event, their B-relay was disqualified for a false start after claiming 3rd overall in a tie with Alabama, so they won’t take home as many points as anticipated.

NC STATE HAS SELECTED FREESTYLE FOR THE MEN’S SKINS

NC State was dominant in this event, coming in almost 2 seconds clear of the field to win in 1:15.00. Given their dominance, it made sense that NC State selected freestyle for the skins race later in the session. However, they will certainly have a force to contend with as Virginia put together two very solid relays to finish 2-3 in 1:16.85 and 1:17.98, respectively.

Tess Howley led the UVA women to a 1-2 finish in the 200 butterfly, throwing down a huge jackpot swim in 1:54.07 to best the field by nearly a second. Katie Grimes picked-up a second place finish for UVA, not long after her victory in the 500 freestyle with a 1:54.84.

UVA standout Thomas Heilman picked up an easy victory for the Cavs in the men’s 200 butterfly, throwing down a time of 1:40.54 to lead the field by just shy of 2 seconds. Heilman’s swim earned him a big jackpot as well, helping UVA’s point total. Jacob Johnson had a strong showing for second, touching in 1:42.35.

While not an official NCAA Championship event, the 100 IM was one of the most exciting events of the night thus far. UVA’s Teagan O’Dell was stellar in another swim in her debut for the Cavs. O’Dell picked up the win in 52.63, hitting the wall first for a UVA 1-2 finish with teammate Leah Hayes. Hayes, an IM specialist also had a strong showing with a time of 53.31. holding off NC State’s Lilian Christianson (53.69).

UVA saw yet-another victory as their men continued to impress in a strong field of contestants. Spencer Nicholas led the field for the UVA men, hitting the wall ahead of the field in 47.15, coming in with a solid performance. NC State’s Daniel Diehl followed-up his strong 200 backstroke swim with a 47.39 performance for 2nd place.

Leah Shackley led the NC State squad with a great September swim, besting the field by 1.5 seconds in 50.58. Shackley, one of the top 100 backstrokers in the NCAA, earned a jackpot for NC State with her performance. Despite the jackpot for NC State, UVA managed to keep the point spread relatively even via a 2-3 finish from Alyssa Sagle (52.16) and Jessica Thompson (52.22).

After winning the 200 backstroke to open the session, David King was back for victory in the 100 backstroke, hitting the wall in 45.52 to lead a strong field. The top 3 finishers in the race all finished under 46 seconds as Isaiah Aleksenko from NC State touched 2nd in 45.72 and Tommy Hagar of Bama finished 3rd in 45.87.

Anna Moesch, the American Record holder in the LCM 100 freestyle was the only swimmer in the field to break 47 seconds in the 100 freestyle, dropping a 46.86 for the victory, continuing the momentum for UVA. After nearly beating her personal best in the 50 freestyle, Alabama’s Cadence Vincent had another great swim for 2nd place, touching in 47.69.

NC State opted to save its top two freestylers for the skins event as the event is slated to start just minutes after this final. Even with that, they still came out on top with Jerry Fox taking the win in 41.79. Maximus Williamson added another race to his schedule and still threw down a strong performance, taking 2nd in 41.88.

Claire Curzan looked controlled in her opening 50 backstroke sprint as she led teammate Sara Curtis by over a half second for the win in the heat, touching in 23.50. Curtis, the LCM world record holder in this event, touched in 24.08 for the UVA 1-2 finish.

Curzan continued her siege of the event, once-again leading Curtis with a 23.59. The final 4 will be all UVA and NC State with Curzan, Curtis, Shackley, and Pelaez.

It will be a UVA-showdown in the final between Curzan and Curtis. Both swimmers must give an honest effort in the final according to CSL rules, so we can still expect a big race between the pair.

Curzan finished-up the skins event with a win, solidifying her sweep of all 4 rounds. Curzan threw down a 23.74, with all 4 of her rounds coming in under 24 seconds.

As with the women’s skins event, the winning relay team made the correct selection it seems as NC State easily took the top spot(s) in the opening round, with Kai Winkler and Quintin McCarty tying for first in 19.49. In a big hit to their scoring, UGA had both of its swimmers eliminated after finishing 7-8.

Once again, Winkler and McCarty posted a 1-2 finish for NC State and the pair look primed to progress to the final as they were the only swimmers under 20 seconds in the field. UVA, however, still has both of their swimmers in the 3rd round as they look to shake-up the standings.

As with the women’s skins, the men’s skins will feature a head-to-head showdown between two teammates in the final as the NC State duo of Kai Winkler and Quintin McCarty finished 1-2 in the third round of racing. As previously mentioned, neither swimmer will be able to cruise through the finals, despite it being all NC State due to the CSL’s “honest effort” rules, meaning that we’re in for another great race.

After winning the 100 IM, Teagan O’Dell threw down an impressive 1:54.14 for the top spot in the women’s 200 IM. O’Dell, swimming her first meet for UVA after transferring, finished over 3 seconds ahead of her competition. Notably, O’Dell’s performance here was only a tenth off of what she swam at the 2026 ACC Championships while still competing for Cal, a great sign for her considering its only September.

Her UVA teammate Sophia Umstead picked up a 2nd place finish for a points boost, as she touched in 1:57.64 as the only other swimmer under 1:58.

Men’s 200 IM

Maximus Williamson continued a strong showing with a dominant showing in the men’s 200 IM, claiming victory by nearly 2 seconds in 1:42.70. Williamson, coming off of a breakout performance at US Nationals in this event, is a likely NCAA Championships favorite and will continue to be one to watch throughout the rest of the CSL season. Also continuing a strong campaign here, Daniel Diehl placed 2nd overall in 1:44.64.

Completing the breaststroke sweep was Eneli Jefimova, who won the 100 breaststroke in an impressive 57.63 to lead the field by over 2 seconds and pick up some jackpot points for her team. The NC State star from Estonia is the defending NCAA Champion in this event with a best time of 56.30 from last season. She was notably faster here than she was at her mid-season meet last fall, where she went 57.68 in November. Behind Jefimova, her teammate Morgan Cope also finished under the 1:00 barrier for 2nd in 59.83 to lead a 1-2 charge.

After the men’s 200 breaststroke proved to be a tight race, expectations were high for the 100 breaststroke, and it did not disappoint. Competing in his first SCY 100 breaststroke, NC State freshman Jan Gajda took home the victory with a very solid 52.55 performance to score valuable points for his team. Behind him, UVA’s Danis Volontir also posted his first-ever 100 breaststroke in the short course pool, touching in 52.78 for 2nd.

Sara Curtis continued a strong showing after finishing 2nd in the 50 backstroke skins for UVA, winning the women’s 50 freestyle in 21.41. Curtis is setting herself up to have a big year and should be one to watch, especially after breaking a LCM World Record over the summer. Alabama’s Cadence Vincent was just .06 off of her lifetime best to finish 2nd in 21.63, a solid swim for her as well.

After winning the men’s skins with freestyle, NC State was the favorite to take home the win here in the individual 50 freestyle. Despite racing neither of their skins swimmers, the Wolfpack still picked up the 1-2 finish here for a huge points boost, led by Jerry Fox in 19.13. Wells Walker just held off UVA’s Maximus Williamson for 2nd in 19.56. Just coming off of the 200 IM, Williamson managed an impressive 19.57 himself.

Coming off of her skins victory and her 200 backstroke win, Claire Curzan was back in the water again for UVA, winning the women’s 100 butterfly in a time of 50.25 to lead the field by over 2 seconds. Curzan, who was a 2021 Olympian in the 100 butterfly, has strayed away from the event internationally but still competes the event at the NCAA level. She was the runner-up in the event at the 2026 NCAA Championships last spring. Following in the footsteps of his UVA teammate and fellow Olympian, Thomas Heilman won the men’s 100 butterfly for Virginia, claiming the top spot by a half second in 45.19. While Heilman has been faster, he is likely to be on the upcoming skins relay for UVA and did what he needed to for the Cavs to get valuable points heading into the final events. NC State still picked up momentum though with a 2-3 finish from Isaiah Aleksenko (45.76) and Kaii Winkler (45.95).

Women’s 200 Freestyle

UVA superstar Anna Moesch earned another win, taking home the crown in the women’s 200 freestyle by just over 2 seconds. Moesch, one of the fastest performers in history in this event, led the field in a time of 1:42.99 as the only swimmer under 1:45. UGA saw a valuable pick-up from Marie Landreneau, who held-off Mosech’s UVA teammate Cavan Gormsen for 2nd in 1:45.14.

We have reached the last individual event of the meet right as my fingers are about to fall off. While I was busy typing, it was David King who won the men’s 200 freestyle in a solid effort, touching in 1:33.45, just holding-off Tomas Koski‘s 1:33.57 effort.

Going into the super skins events, here are the updated scores:

UVA continues to lead, but the Cavs are not clear of NC State. With solid relay efforts, NC State could still take-home the title tonight. Alabama leads Georgia by just under 50 points, so that gap remains surpassable as well.

Virginia got off to a hot start, leading with NC State through the first heat of the skins event. The Cavs were the only team under 1:37, finishing in 1:35.72.

Virginia once-again took the top spot with NC State close behind. However, in an upset it was NC State’s second relay being eliminated behind a strong Alabama relay.

It will be a Virginia and NC State showdown in the final as they once-again finished 1-2 in the 3rd round of skins. Virginia should be the favorite as they have been the only team under 1:37 in the entire skins competition.

Virginia got the job done, defeating NC State in the final round of the women’s medley relay skins for the points pick up ahead of the final event of the meet.

Heading into the last round, NC State notably opted to move from lane 2 to lane 1 for their remaining relay for cleaner water. While we don’t know if this is allowed under CSL rules, NC State previously was swimming out of both lanes so technically they remain in their own lane.

Virginia had a massive swim to seal the win for their team, leading a strong NC State relay by over 2 seconds. The Virginia team saw a huge boost from Thomas Heilman, who threw down a massive split on the butterfly leg. While we are awaiting final splits for the relays, Heilman built over a body-length lead during his leg of the race.

Match MVPs:

Well folks, it’s been a great meet. My fingers are hurting after nearly 4000 words typed, but it was an exciting night for all. UVA took home the prize in a score of 666 points, while NC State finished in 2nd to close out the 2nd match of the CSL season, as we look forward to more matches to come.
