Match 1 of the inaugural College Swimming League (CSL) season has concluded. It was a busy session with Indiana coming away with the win. Alex Shackell wins the SwimSwam MVP on the women’s side while Michigan’s Lorne Wigginton wins the MVP on the men’s side.
There were only a few commercials during the session, with two breaks coming during each of the 500 freestyles. It was a trade off to have commercials during events like the 500 to ensure there could be a longer event and include events like the 200s and up. Attendance has been stated to be ~700 people but we will update as we hear a more finalized number.
MVP Awards
Women’s MVP: Alex Shackell, Indiana
Alex Shackell jackpotted all of her swims tonight. She had the biggest jackpot of the night (in a regularly scored race) with 19 points in the 200 fly where she swam to a 1:52.24, a strong swim for the end of September. She went head to head with Big Ten foe Hannah Bellard of Michigan in the race. Bellard notably won the Big Ten title ahead of Shackell last February.
The Indiana sophomore then swam to a win in the 50 fly skins race, jackpotting the final 50 as she finished ahead of Louisville’s Anastasia Gorbenko. Shackell’s final win of the night came in the 100 fly where she swam to a 50.54 for 10 points, earning 1 jackpot point.
Men’s MVP: Lorne Wigginton, Michigan
Wigginton swam to wins in the 500 free, 200 fly, and 200 free on the night. His first win came in the 500 free where he out-touched Indiana’s Aaron Shackell for the win in a 4:15.58 while Shackell swam to a 4:15.69.
The Michigan Wolverine then out-touched the other Shackell as Wigginton swam to a 1:43.48 200 fly, to earn the win ahead of Andrew Shackell‘s 1:44.80. Wigginton’s final win came in the 200 free where he swam to a 1:34.36, once again just out-touching Aaron Shackell‘s 1:34.78.
The Format/Production
- The meet format is fast, SwimSwam live recaps are tough
- Jackpot points bring a huge gap
- The audio got figured out, first day jitters it happens
- The graphics are elite
- Just because it’s September, doesn’t mean we can’t see fast swimming
Indiana
- Miranda Grana is one to watch out for, last year’s championships seem to be a fluke
- Jackpoting a final skins race…we see you Alex Shackell
- Josh Bey always has some of the best walk-outs and gets it done in the pool too
Michigan
- Let Bella Sprint
- Lorne Wigginton knows how to win and has the endurance needed for a quick and busy evening like this
Louisville
- Nikita Sheremet has an 18 point 50 free in him, it will come
- Strategy for the Cardinals leaving Sheremet leaving out of the 100 free to save him up for the skins race
- Anastasia Gorbenko continues to be the leader on the women’s team and her versatility is a huge asset for meets like this that include an unknown stroke skins race…but losing points on the final skins race hurts
Ohio State
- Klinge had a strong showing in the skins race
